Free AI Video Generator - What Is Free and What Is Cheap
Is there a truly free AI video generator? What free plans usually limit, which models have the lowest per-second rate and what a test clip really costs.
Free AI video generators exist, but almost always with limits: a watermark, a daily credit pool, a queue, low resolution or no commercial license. Jantaris has no free plan or signup credits, but the cheapest models in the catalog cost cents per second, for example Seedance 2.0 Mini from $0.0366 per second, and Veo 3.1 Lite from $0.177 per video, which is a whole 8-second clip. Below: what free options really give you, the cheapest models per second, what a test clip costs and how to keep spend low.
Can you generate AI video for free?
Yes, in three ways:
- Free plans and daily credits in model makers' apps. Companies behind video models often give new users a trial pool or a few clips per day. Terms change every few weeks, so check the app itself.
- Generators bundled into other services. Video editors and office suites add clip generation as a feature of an account you may already have.
- Open-weight models run locally. Some video models (for example earlier Wan versions from Alibaba) have public weights. Then you pay for hardware and electricity instead of per clip: you need a strong GPU, patience and some setup.
Through an API, none of the models I tested for my video ranking was free.
What free AI video generators usually limit
I am not naming specific companies, because the limits change often. Typical restrictions on free plans:
- a watermark in the corner that you may not remove,
- low resolution, usually 480p-720p, no 1080p or 4K,
- short clips, a few seconds instead of 10-15,
- a queue and low priority, sometimes many minutes per clip,
- a daily cap that runs out after a handful of attempts,
- no commercial license in the free plan's terms,
- no API, so nothing can be automated,
- a required account and content terms you agree to on signup.
That is fine for learning to prompt. For a client Reel or a store ad, a watermark and missing commercial rights usually rule out the free plan.
Jantaris: no free plan, but no subscription either
To be direct: Jantaris has no free plan, welcome credits or trial. You pay from the first generation. In exchange:
- minimum top-up is $10, packages from $10 to $250,
- the balance never expires, so $10 can last for months,
- failed generations cost $0, the hold returns to your balance in full,
- you see the cost before you click, under the Studio form and in the API's
estimated_costfield, - no subscription and no Jantaris watermark (some model makers mark their outputs themselves, for example with an invisible watermark).
Rights to outputs are set by the model makers. Prompts and outputs are not used to train models.
Cheapest AI video models on Jantaris
The lowest rates in the catalog at the time of writing, at each model's lowest resolution:
| Model | Lowest tier | Length | Audio | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 Lite | 720p (1080p same price) | fixed 8 s, text only | no switch in the form | from $0.177 per video |
| Grok Imagine 1.0 Video | 480p | 6-30 s | not listed by the maker | from $0.0299 per second |
| Seedance 2.0 Mini | 480p | 4-15 s | optional, off by default | from $0.0366 per second |
| PixVerse V6 | 360p | 1-15 s | optional, extra charge | from $0.0405 per second |
| Veo 3.1 Fast | 720p (1080p same price) | fixed 8 s | no switch in the form | from $0.354 per video |
| Seedance 2.0 Mini Eco | 720p | 4-15 s | on by default | from $0.0451 per second |
| Wan 3.0 | 480P | 2-30 s | on by default | from $0.0777 per second |
| Vidu Q3 Turbo | 540p | 1-16 s | on, included | from $0.081 per second |
Veo 3.1 Lite and Veo 3.1 Fast bill per clip, so divide the clip price by 8 to get a per-second figure. The rest bill per second. Every resolution and length combination is in the AI cost calculator, and all rates are on the pricing page.

How I pick from this list:
- Idea without a photo, in 1080p: Veo 3.1 Lite. 1080p costs the same as 720p, but it accepts text only.
- Long draft up to 30 s: Grok Imagine 1.0 Video at 480p, or Wan 3.0 at 480P if you need sound.
- Animating a photo: Seedance 2.0 Mini (
image_urlfield) or Veo 3.1 Fast (image inimage_urls). - A dialogue test: Vidu Q3 Turbo, because audio is included.
A vendor sample from MiniMax H3 Max, another low-cost model (from $0.104 per second at 480P), shows that a low rate does not automatically mean a weak frame:
What a test clip costs
A test clip is the shortest allowed length at the lowest resolution. One attempt costs:
| Model | Test clip | Math |
|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 Lite | 8 s, 720p or 1080p | 1 × from $0.177 per video |
| Seedance 2.0 Mini | 5 s, 480p | 5 × from $0.0366 per second |
| PixVerse V6 | 5 s, 360p, no audio | 5 × from $0.0405 per second |
| Grok Imagine 1.0 Video | 6 s (minimum), 480p | 6 × from $0.0299 per second |
| Wan 3.0 with audio | 5 s, 480P | 5 × from $0.0777 per second |
| Vidu Q3 Turbo with audio | 5 s, 540p | 5 × from $0.081 per second |
For comparison, 5 seconds of Kling 3.0 at 720p without audio is 5 × from $0.169 per second, and Seedance 2.5 at 480p is 5 × from $0.261 per second. Across the catalog, the gap between the cheapest and most expensive per-second rates is dozens of times, so I match the model to the stage of work, not to the whole project.
How far does the $10 minimum go? Divide $10 by the test clip cost from the table. With the cheapest models that is dozens of test clips; with 5-second Kling clips at 1080p it is under ten.
How to test cheaply
My workflow for keeping costs down:
- Start frame from a cheap image model. I make the first frame in Z-Image Turbo at $0.02 per image and work out the composition on stills, not on video.
- Motion draft at 480p. I animate that frame in Seedance 2.0 Mini or Wan 3.0 at the lowest resolution, in 2-3 prompt variations.
- Final in the target model. Only the proven prompt and frame get rendered at 1080p in the model with the best picture.
- Audio only when I will use it. Where audio is a surcharge (Kling, PixVerse), drafts are silent.

A test clip in Seedance 2.0 Mini via the API:
curl https://jantaris.com/v1/generate \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $JANTARIS_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "seedance-2.0-mini",
"input": {
"prompt": "Slow push-in on a red and white lighthouse on a rocky coast at blue hour, waves breaking below, cinematic",
"image_url": "https://your-site.com/files/lighthouse.webp",
"resolution": "480p",
"duration": 5
}
}'The response shows estimated_cost right away. If your balance is too low you get a 402 error and nothing runs, so you cannot spend more than you loaded. Details in the generation docs.

FAQ
Is there a free AI video generator without a watermark?
Free app plans usually add a watermark or cap the resolution. Jantaris adds no watermark of its own, but it is not free: you pay per second of video from a balance that starts at $10.
Does Jantaris have free credits?
No. There is no free plan, welcome credit or trial. In exchange the balance never expires and failed generations cost $0.
What is the cheapest AI video generator?
In the Jantaris catalog the lowest rates belong to Veo 3.1 Lite (from $0.177 per video, an 8-second clip), Grok Imagine 1.0 Video, Seedance 2.0 Mini and PixVerse V6 at their lowest resolutions. The order can change with the price list.
How much do 5 seconds of AI video cost?
It depends on the model: from 5 × from $0.0366 per second in Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p to dozens of times more in premium models at 1080p. The calculator and the Studio form show the exact amount.
Can I use free AI video commercially?
That depends on each service's terms, and free plans often exclude commercial use. For paid use, the model makers' terms apply; check them before a campaign.
Can I generate AI video locally for free?
Yes, if the model has open weights and you have a strong GPU. You then pay for hardware and power, and generation is usually slower than in the cloud.
