Runway Alternative with API - 6 Video Models, Pay per Clip
A Runway alternative with no subscription: Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5, Veo 3.1, MiniMax H3, Wan 3.0 and Gemini Omni on one API key, paid per clip.
If you want a Runway alternative where you pay per clip instead of buying a monthly credit allowance, the strongest options are video models from other labs: Kling 3.0 (from $0.169 per second), Seedance 2.5 (from $0.261 per second), Veo 3.1 (Quality), MiniMax H3, Wan 3.0 and Gemini Omni. On Jantaris all six run in one browser Studio and behind one API key, charged from a prepaid balance that never expires. Below: how they map to Runway's tools, what my September test showed, and what a clip costs.
Runway in October 2026: the facts
From Runway's official pricing page and developer docs as of October 2, 2026. Plans change often, so check the current pricing on runway.com before you decide.
- Subscription with credits. Standard, Pro and Max cost $15, $35 and $95 per month, or $12, $28 and $76 per month billed annually. The free plan includes 125 one-time credits.
- Monthly credits reset. On Standard and Pro unused credits do not roll over; on Max up to one month rolls over.
- In-house models. Gen-4.5 is the main video model and Aleph handles editing of existing footage. The app also offers some third-party models, including Kling 3.0 and Seedance 2.0.
- A separate developer API. Runway's API runs on credits bought in its developer portal at $0.01 per credit, billed separately from app subscriptions.
Runway is a polished production environment with projects, editing and post tools in one place. If you use it daily and spend your credits every month, there is no reason to switch. A pay-per-clip alternative makes sense in specific cases.
When a pay-per-clip alternative fits better
- Uneven volume. Five shots one month, eighty the next. A balance with no expiry date handles that better than an allowance that resets.
- A specific model. You need a 30-second scene in one pass, native 4K, or lip-synced dialogue.
- One balance for everything. The same account pays for video, images, music and chat models.
- Automation. One API key for scripts, n8n and Make, with the cost of each task returned before it runs (
estimated_cost). - Failed runs cost nothing. A task that ends in
failedreleases its hold in full.
Six video models to use instead of Runway
| Model | Lab | Length | Resolution | Strength | Price on Jantaris |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kling 3.0 | Kuaishou | 3-15 s | 720p, 1080p, 4K | multi-shot prompts, dialogue with lip sync | from $0.169 per second |
| Seedance 2.5 | ByteDance | 4-30 s | 480p-1080p | 30 s in one pass, up to 30 reference images, video editing | from $0.261 per second |
| Veo 3.1 (Quality) | 8 s | 720p, 1080p, 4K | image quality, light and texture | from $2.53 per video | |
| MiniMax H3 | MiniMax | 4-15 s | 768p, 2K | stereo audio, face and voice references | from $0.161 per second |
| Wan 3.0 | Alibaba | 2-30 s | 480p-4K | long clips, video from a document or web page | from $0.0777 per second |
| Gemini Omni | 4-10 s | 720p, 1080p, 4K | a new take on your own reference clip | from $1.45 per video |
"From" means higher resolution or audio costs more. Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni are billed per clip, the rest per second. Head-to-head pages: Kling 3.0 vs Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0 vs Seedance 2.5 and MiniMax H3 vs Seedance 2.5.
How I pick:
- Kling 3.0 for people on screen, several shots and English dialogue.
- Seedance 2.5 for a longer scene with a beginning and an end, or heavy reference work.
- Veo 3.1 for a single hero shot at the highest quality.
- MiniMax H3 for talking characters, with audio included in the clip price. In my September Polish speech test MiniMax H3 Max got every word right, but I ran that test outside Jantaris in a different setup, so make one trial clip before a series.
- Wan 3.0 for 20-30 seconds at up to 4K, or video built from a document.
- Gemini Omni when I already have footage and want a restyled version.

What Jantaris does not have: a timeline editor, team projects or Runway's own models. You download the clips and cut them in your editor of choice.
My test: coffee and a tram
On September 27, 2026 I gave several video models two identical English prompts: coffee poured into a white cup, and a yellow and red Warsaw tram on a rainy street at dusk. Four-second clips, one attempt per model, no rerolls. The full ranking (in Polish) is on my blog: AI video generator ranking. Scores for the models available on Jantaris:
| Model | Coffee | Tram | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 Fast | 8.5 | 7.5 | best coffee, tram moves too fast |
| Wan 3.0 | 8.0 | 7.5 | best reflections, added music nobody asked for |
| Seedance 2.0 Fast | 8.0 | 7.0 | clear push-in, cream instead of yellow tram |
| Kling 3.0 | 7.0 | 6.5 | sharp 1080p, weak on colors and time of day |

Two shots are a hint, not a verdict. The practical lesson: repeat colors and time of day in the prompt, and add "static camera on a tripod" for vehicles. More phrasing like this is in AI video prompts for camera moves.
What the labs show
Vendor demos show the strengths best. Kling 3.0 cuts several shots from one prompt; Seedance 2.5 renders a full 30-second scene in a single pass:
What it costs
No subscription on Jantaris. Top up from $10 and each finished clip is charged from your balance. Sample costs per clip:
| Model | Billing | 5 s clip | 10 s clip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wan 3.0 | per second | 5 × from $0.0777 per second | 10 × from $0.0777 per second |
| MiniMax H3 | per second | 5 × from $0.161 per second | 10 × from $0.161 per second |
| Kling 3.0 | per second | 5 × from $0.169 per second | 10 × from $0.169 per second |
| Seedance 2.5 | per second | 5 × from $0.261 per second | 10 × from $0.261 per second |
| Veo 3.1 Fast | per 8 s clip | from $0.354 per video | - |
| Veo 3.1 (Quality) | per 8 s clip | from $2.53 per video | - |
| Gemini Omni | per clip | from $1.45 per video | depends on length |
The exact cost for your resolution and audio settings appears in Studio before you click Generate, and in estimated_cost over the API. A subscription is a flat fee for a monthly allowance; a balance is charged per clip. Which comes out cheaper depends on your volume. Per-second rates for every model are in AI video cost per second and on the pricing page.

The same clip over the API
Video takes from under a minute to several minutes, so you submit a task and collect the result:
curl https://jantaris.com/v1/generate \

-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "kling-3.0",
"input": {
"prompt": "A yellow and red tram passing along a rainy street at dusk, reflections on wet cobblestones, people with umbrellas, static camera on a tripod",
"duration": 5,
"resolution": "1080p",
"aspect_ratio": "16:9"
},
"webhook_url": "https://your-server.example/hooks/jantaris"
}'The 202 response carries the task id and estimated_cost. Poll GET https://jantaris.com/v1/tasks/{id} or wait for the signed webhook. To switch to Seedance 2.5 or Wan 3.0, change model and, if needed, the resolution value. Details are in the generate docs and async video with webhooks; a model-by-model API overview is in AI video API comparison 2026.
FAQ
What is the best Runway alternative?
It depends on the job. Kling 3.0 for people and multi-shot scenes, Seedance 2.5 for 30-second scenes, Veo 3.1 for a single 4K hero shot, MiniMax H3 for talking characters. All of them share one balance on Jantaris.
Does Runway have an API?
Yes. Runway offers a developer API billed with credits bought in its developer portal, separately from app subscriptions. Check Runway's developer docs for current model rates.
Is Runway Gen-4.5 available on Jantaris?
No. Jantaris does not offer Runway's models. You get models from Kuaishou, ByteDance, Google, MiniMax and Alibaba, billed per clip or per second.
Do Jantaris credits expire?
There are no credits and no subscription. Your balance is in US dollars, never expires, and only successful generations are charged.
Is there a free Runway alternative?
Jantaris has no free plan or signup credits; the minimum top-up is $10. Some labs offer limited free tiers in their own apps, and open-weight models such as earlier Wan releases run locally on a strong GPU.
Can I edit existing footage like with Aleph?
Partly. Seedance 2.5 edits and extends video, HappyHorse 1.0 restyles a clip, and Kling 3.0 Motion Control transfers motion from your footage onto a character image. There is no timeline editor.
