For everyday images, use GPT Image 2.5: it is newer, already cheaper than GPT Image 2 at 1K on Jantaris, and has one flat price whatever the quality, all the way up to max. Use GPT Image 2 when you need 2K or 4K or an unusual frame such as 21:9 or a 3:1 strip, because GPT Image 2.5 on Jantaris offers only three sizes up to 1536 px. Both take up to 16 reference images and prompts up to 32,000 characters.

Key differences

  • Price. GPT Image 2.5 costs $0.0432 per image, regardless of quality or the number of references. GPT Image 2 costs from $0.075 per image at 1K and more at 2K and 4K.
  • Size. GPT Image 2.5: 1024x1024, 1536x1024, 1024x1536 or auto. GPT Image 2: 1K, 2K and 4K tiers; at 4K a 16:9 image is 3840x2160 and a square is 2880x2880.
  • Aspect ratios. GPT Image 2 has 16 preset ratios from 1:3 to 3:1, including 21:9 and 9:21. GPT Image 2.5 has square, 3:2 landscape and 2:3 portrait.
  • Quality. In GPT Image 2.5 you set quality from low to max and the price stays the same. GPT Image 2 has no such field on Jantaris.
  • Generation. GPT Image 2 is the ChatGPT Images 2.0 model (April 2026). GPT Image 2.5 came out in September 2026, and OpenAI announced faster generation, more natural images and better detail consistency across rounds of edits.
  • Shared. Text-to-image and editing from images, up to 16 references in image_urls, prompts up to 32,000 characters, one image per request.

When to pick GPT Image 2.5

  • Blog covers, thumbnails and social graphics at 1536x1024 or 1024x1536.
  • A series of images where the per-image price matters.
  • Final versions at max quality at no extra cost.
  • Editing a photo from several references when 1536 px is enough.

When to pick GPT Image 2

  • Prints and posters in 4K.
  • 21:9 website banners or 3:1 profile header strips.
  • A 2K image you plan to crop later.
  • Exact social formats: 9:16 for stories or 4:5 for feed posts.

Cost in practice

At 1K, GPT Image 2 costs about 1.7 times as much as GPT Image 2.5. At 2K the gap grows to about 2.9 times and at 4K to about 4.6 times, because GPT Image 2.5 has a single rate. That comparison is partly theoretical, though: GPT Image 2.5 on Jantaris cannot output 2K or 4K, so for large formats GPT Image 2 is the only choice of the two. At 4K, set a specific aspect ratio, since auto is rejected there. Rates: $0.0432 per image and from $0.075 per image (1K); every tier is on /pricing.

In my own GPT Image 2.5 test (published in Polish on promptowy.com) across five prompts, the tier that Jantaris serves as gpt-image-2.5 scored 8.5/10 at high quality and 8.6 at max, and a Polish shop sign with diacritics came out correct at every quality level. Timing was about 18 s at high and 38 s at max, measured with another provider. GPT Image 2 was not in that test. A wider comparison: GPT Image 2.5 vs Nano Banana Pro vs FLUX.2.

FAQ

GPT Image 2.5 or 2: which is better?

For images up to 1536 px, GPT Image 2.5: newer, cheaper and with a quality setting. For 2K, 4K and wide frames, GPT Image 2, since only it offers those formats on Jantaris.

Does GPT Image 2.5 do 4K?

Not on Jantaris. The largest sizes are 1536x1024 and 1024x1536. OpenAI allows custom dimensions, but Jantaris does not expose them yet. For 4K, use GPT Image 2.

Does max quality cost more in GPT Image 2.5?

No. The price, $0.0432 per image, is the same for low and max. Higher quality only means a longer wait.

Will a GPT Image 2 prompt work in 2.5?

Yes, both accept prompt and image_urls. Just switch aspect_ratio to one of the 2.5 sizes and drop the resolution field, which 2.5 does not have.

Which one renders text better?

GPT Image 2.5 wrote a Polish sign without errors in my test. I did not run GPT Image 2 on the same prompt, so I do not compare them.
