If you can describe the scene in text alone and 720p or 1080p is enough, use Veo 3.1 Lite: it makes the same 8-second clip as Fast at half the price. Use Veo 3.1 Fast when you want to start from a photo, show a specific product or character from a reference, or need 4K, where Fast costs only about 12% more than Lite. Both return an 8-second clip in 16:9 or 9:16 and charge a flat amount per generation.

Key differences

  • Price. Veo 3.1 Lite costs from $0.177 per video per clip, Veo 3.1 Fast costs from $0.354 per video. At 720p and 1080p Fast is exactly 2 times the price.
  • Image input. Lite works from text only and rejects images. Fast takes up to 3 images in image_urls, as frames of the shot or as appearance references for a character or product.
  • 4K. In both tiers 4K costs far more than 1080p. In Lite it is about 8 times the 1080p price, in Fast about 4.6 times, so at 4K the gap between the tiers shrinks to about 12%.
  • Generation. Fast has been available from Google since October 2025; Lite arrived in March 2026 as the cheapest tier of the Veo 3.1 family.
  • Shared. 8-second length, 16:9 and 9:16, 720p, 1080p and 4K, prompts up to 4,000 characters, the same price for 720p and 1080p.

When to pick Veo 3.1 Lite

  • Backgrounds and B-roll when you have no photos of your own.
  • Exploring an idea: many variants of one prompt at a low cost each.
  • Landscape and mood clips with no specific product in frame.
  • A rough draft of an ad script before producing it on a pricier model.

When to pick Veo 3.1 Fast

  • Animating a photo: a packshot, a session photo or a game frame as the first frame.
  • Shots that must show a specific product or character from a reference.
  • 4K footage, since the extra cost over Lite is small there.
  • 9:16 reels with your own product, where the look has to match.

Cost in practice

At 720p and 1080p Lite costs half of Fast, and both resolutions are the same price, so I always pick 1080p. At 4K it flips: one 4K Lite clip costs roughly as much as 8 Lite clips at 1080p, and 4K Fast is only about 12% more than that. If you need 4K, take Fast, because the small premium also gets you image input. Length is fixed at 8 s, so the price per generation is the price per shot. Amounts for every tier are in the table above and on /pricing.

Veo 3.1 Fast scored 8.0/10 in my first AI video ranking (published in Polish on promptowy.com), tested with another provider on shorter clips. I have not tested Lite, so I do not compare the image quality of the two tiers. Fast against the full model is in Veo 3.1 vs Veo 3.1 Fast, and prices for all three tiers in Veo 3.1 API pricing.

FAQ

Veo 3.1 Lite or Fast: which should I start with?

Lite, if you can describe the scene in text and stay at 1080p, since it costs half. Fast, if you have a photo or a product that has to appear in the frame.

Does Veo 3.1 Lite accept an image?

No, Lite works from the prompt only. To animate a photo, use Veo 3.1 Fast or Veo 3.1 (Quality).

Does Veo 3.1 Lite do 4K?

Yes, but at 4K it costs almost as much as Fast at 4K. For 4K I pick Fast, since the premium is small and you get reference images too.

Can I make a clip longer than 8 seconds?

Not in one generation. Every Veo clip on Jantaris is 8 s; build longer scenes in your editor or pick a model with longer clips, such as Seedance 2.5.

How do I switch a request from Fast to Lite?

Change model to veo-3.1-lite and remove image_urls, since Lite accepts only prompt, aspect_ratio and resolution. There is an example in the docs.
