Both models come from Google, but Gemini Omni 1.1 costs roughly half as much at the same length and gives you more freedom: 4-10 s clips, a photo as first frame or as a reference, and restyling an existing recording. Pick Veo 3.1 for a classic from-scratch shot with a longer, more detailed prompt, if a fixed 8-second length works for you. In my own test both received the same overall score.

Key differences

  • Length. Gemini Omni 1.1 does 4, 6, 8 or 10 s. Veo 3.1 (Quality) on Jantaris is always 8 s.
  • Input. Omni 1.1 takes one photo as a locked first frame, or 1 or 3 images as character and style references, or one clip of up to 30 s to rework. Veo takes up to 3 images as frames.
  • Resolution. Both offer 720p, 1080p and 4K. Omni adds 360p, but at the same price as 720p.
  • Prompt. 2,000 characters in Omni, 4,000 in Veo.
  • Aspect ratios. Only 16:9 and 9:16 in both.
  • Audio. Veo has no audio toggle or surcharge on Jantaris. Omni 1.1 has no audio parameter either and the catalog does not describe its soundtrack, so check one clip before a batch.

When to pick Gemini Omni 1.1

  • 4-second drafts before spending more on a longer clip or 4K.
  • A character from a photo placed in a new scene.
  • Restyling your own footage.
  • A 10-second shot, longer than a Veo clip.

When to pick Veo 3.1

  • A from-scratch shot described in detail, beyond 2,000 characters.
  • Animating a photo as the first frame for a polished final shot.
  • A trailer cut from 8-second shots.
  • Liquid physics: in my test Veo's coffee pour (8/10) beat Omni's (7/10, with decorative, cartoonish steam).

Cost in practice

At 8 seconds in 720p or 1080p, a Veo clip costs about twice as much as an Omni 1.1 clip of the same length. At 4K the gap narrows to about 1.7x. Even 10 seconds of Omni at 1080p costs about 60% of a Veo clip. Both bill per clip, not per second: Omni by length and resolution, Veo one rate for 8 s. Omni's reference-clip mode has its own flat per-job price (at 720p and 1080p, the same as two 6-second clips). Dropping to 360p does not lower the price. Rates: from $1.02 per video (6 s clip) and from $2.53 per video (8 s clip); full table on /pricing.

In my video model ranking (Polish blog) both scored 8/10. Gemini Omni Flash 1.1, Google's name for this model, spoke a Polish test sentence without errors and was faster (35-46 s against 59-68 s for Veo). I tested on another provider, so timings on Jantaris may differ. More: Gemini Omni API, Veo 3.1 API pricing.
